Rio Lis

Rio Lis is a Portuguese river which rises near the village of sources, two and a half kilometers south of Cortes parish, which belongs to the district and county of the city of Leiria. This city is bathed by the waters, which also joined the Lena River. The initial part of the journey is made in the south to north, ending in their final kilometers, having the direction east-west. The river comes a limestone area, passes through cuts and intersects the city of Leiria, with margins almost all occupied by gardens and walking paths. In its middle portion, after the river passing through the urban area, are formed alluvial plains, to which he named Lis Fields.

Paper Mill

It is the first paper mill known in Portugal and the first factory of the city, in which are manufactured the first leaves cellulose-based. The existence of a paper mill in the city have influenced the fact Leiria was one of the first Portuguese cities to have a printing press, which would come out in 1496 one of the first printed books in the country. Recent studies indicate that the paper mill was built on a pre-existing structure, possibly the thirteenth century, first dedicated to grinding cereiais. In the sixteenth century the mill became part of the Convent of Saint Augustine of goods Leiria and served to the convent water supply and the Old Military Barracks. Throughout the twentieth century the mill returned to the grinding cereals. The space has also worked as olive oil mill.

Cortes

The village of Cortes is one of the oldest of Leiria term. The first documentary references until now known, there are around 1250 a parchment on which the Knights Templar (Tomar) registered its existing properties in Leiria term. The Lis River, which rises in the sources, is the living soul of this land, irrigating their land and inspiring several generations of poets.
